Welcome to the Languages Department at PPS where we believe having access to learning a new language is essential to opening our pupils' minds to the rich, varied world we have around us. Our curriculum provides pupils with broad knowledge, understanding and effective language skills to enable them to read, listen to and understand, write and speak in another language. Our curriculum explores cultures and perspectives, within and outside the classroom, on a personal, local, national and global level.

Lessons are balanced between the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking over 3 lessons in KS3 and 4 lessons in KS4 across a two-week timetable. Pupils are taught in mixed-ability groups and teachers promote a life-long love of language learning based on a curriculum that promotes an interest in other cultures and languages. All pupils study Spanish in KS3 and will be able to opt to study Spanish in KS4. Languages remain optional at GCSE level.

 

PURBROOK PARK MFL – EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND TRIPS

At Purbrook Park MFL, we offer a wide range of extracurricular opportunities for students throughout the academic year. We believe that learning a language should extend beyond the classroom, giving students the opportunity to experience real-life situations where they can apply their language skills. Through these regular experiences, pupils are able to appreciate the value of language learning from the very beginning of their journey with us at Purbrook Park.

To support this, we offer the following trips and activities, all of which students are encouraged to take part in.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN MFL 

Studying Modern Foreign Languages opens doors to a vast range of global career pathways. Language skills demonstrate adaptability, cultural agility, and critical communication abilities that employers across every sector actively seek.

  • Translation & Interpreting: Work as an in-house or freelance specialist, translating texts or providing simultaneous interpretation for international organisations, legal institutions, and media outlets.

  • Education & Academia: Teach MFL at primary, secondary, or university levels, develop curriculum materials, or teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL) abroad.

  • International Business & Marketing: Drive global trade, manage international supplier relationships, or tailor digital marketing campaigns to local markets for multinational corporations.

  • Diplomacy & Public Policy: Work within civil service, diplomatic missions, or international bodies like the UN and EU, shaping foreign policy and handling international relations.

  • Travel, Tourism & Hospitality: Coordinate international operations, manage global events, or work in luxury hospitality and travel management.

  • Publishing & Journalism: Edit translated literature, report on global news, or produce multilingual digital media content.
